I had picked this book up by chance sometime in the mid-to-late 1980s and have read it once a year, nearly every year since. For me, there has never been a story so engrossing, never a main character so believable, or a plotline so interesting and fun. This is what historical novels should be when seeking escapism. As the French Revolution threatens, a young runaway orphan in England finds hope by joining a ragged group of performance artists run by the enigmatic Jack. From then on, Zoroaster Mortimer grows up and explores the highs and lows of the British society, finds a new family, and discovers the burden and gratification of mutability.
The pages are so absorbing and colorful, but it is not satisfying end that makes this book so wonderful, it's really the journey and the vibrant characters through it. Mary Brown has woven an amazing story in this novel. It's truly written entertainment at its zenith.

Absolutely one of my favorites
Fast shipping and as described. Thank you
I love this book, I've read it at least 10 times, and I love it more every single time.
I had a paperback version of this book and was hesitant to lend it out because it's one of my favorite books ever. Now that I have the hardcopy I can share and let others experience this wonderful story!
Found this at an old book fair in near my home town and somehow my copy went missing.. I bought it because it was one of my favorite reads ever.
picked this up at random from the library back in the 90's and had to buy my own copy. Love it - have read it at least once a year since. Just wish I could find #2 in the series, The Heart Has Its Reasons.
This is a standard romance story, albeit cleaner than most. I'm not really into such stories, so I would never rate it too highly. I have to give it points for having an ending that is not entirely predictable.
