Andre Norton holds a special place in my heart - it was through reading her works that I developed a passion for the sci-fi/fantasy genres. The Witch World novels I have read and re-read over the course of my life. Why? Because they are, simply put, exciting and full of adventure with characters that overcome significant difficulties over the course of Norton's novels, in order to reach their potential. Witch World, the first book in a series of novels set in different parts of that world, where witches and ordinary men and women live, is no exception.
Simon Tregarth is a man from our Earth who is given the opportunity to enter a new world when he is faced with his likely death - he has been on the run for some time due to some poor decisions. After entering the Witch World he meets a woman who is been hunted. From that point on, Simon's life is irrevocably changed as he finds himself in the middle of a war against the Kolder, an alien race whose scientific knowledge is been used to control the people of the Witch World. All that stands against them are the Witches and Guardsman of Estcarp and the knowledge that Simon brings with him from our world. There is plenty of intrigue as different players jockey for power and Estcarp is all but surrounded by countries who are deeply suspicious of the Power that the witches of Estcarp wield.
Witch World drew me into the mysterious world of the witches of Estcarp and I really liked the characters and the sense of a millenias worth of history that Norton is able to engender through her prose. Simon is the kind of guy that adapts easily to new situations and is quite resourceful as circumstance demands plus there is a strong connection between him and Jaelith with a hint of more than just liking (ok, I freely admit I like some good old fashioned romance without oodles of steamy stuff which in my opinion does nothing for any story - sex is great, just don't hit me with it in my reads). Both Jaelith and Loyse are strong, feminine characters that buck the mould women in the witch world are expected to live (marriage and children) - the former is a witch with power in her own right, while the latter is an heiress who cuts her hair, wears mail and escapes her axe marriage (marriage by proxy) to Yvian of Karsten.
Overall, Norton has an economical style of writing that draws readers into her fantastical worlds, that are steeped in history and peopled by facinating characters and creatures. I am now looking forward to re-reading the other Witch World novels that have facinated me for a good forty years.

Witch World Andre Norton 9780441897087 Books Reviews

A very enjoyable sequel to Witch World that kept me reading till the end. Web of the Witch World picks up Simon and Jaelith's story approximately a year after the first book ends. Simon is now wed to Jaelith and he is a March Lorder, defending Estcarp's borders. However, not all is well and word is delivered to Simon that Loyse has being kidnapped by some unknown foe. He immediately sets off on the trail of the kidnappers and finds it leads him into Karsten, while Jaelith heads to her former witch sisters in the hopes of convincing them that she still has her powers.
I really liked the way in which Andre Norton continues to develop the characters of Simon and Jaelith by putting through a rough patch in their marriage. Barriers and misunderstanding are placed between them as Simon strives to understand why Jaelith is so bent on returning to the sisterhood and wonders if she regrets her choice to marry him. In typical Norton fashion, her characters grow in understanding of themselves and find they are more than capable of new achievements when they work together.
The story-line is well plotted and the action moves quickly with few slow moments. New and old foes come to the fore and Simon and Jaelith find themselves struggling against the enemies of Estcarp. All in all, Web of the Witch World is a rather entertaining adventure story.
This is the first of the Witch World books and a classic. To be honest, most of the spec-fic classics I've read lately have been fairly disappointing. I thought this one bucked the trend and held up fairly well. Overall I'd give it a 3.5, rounding up for it being a classic.

We open with Simon Tregarth, our protagonist, on the run in a distinctly noir setting. It has a 1940s feel to it which probably felt like the nearly recent past when the book was released in 1963. Anyhow, we don't spend too much time in the 40s, as Simon escapes the people pursuing him by striking a deal with a shady character who promises him a portal to the world where he truly belongs. And off we go with our traditional portal fantasy!

Simon finds himself in a new world and immediately sees a person on the run from pursuers. Jumping in without knowing what's going on he helps the woman hide from her pursuers. This ends up working out for him as this in turn allows him a time and place to learn the language of his new land and find a place there. The book pretty much skips over those details!

The rest of the book primarily features Simon, the lady he rescued whose name we don't find out til the end, Koris (a dwarf who ends up a Captain in the guards), and Loyse, the heir to another kingdom who is desperate to escape her father's (stepfather's?) plans for her. There's quite a few small kingdoms with roughly described politics and stances and a lot of battle scenes. There's a bit of dipping into sci-fantasy with some interesting technology cropping up unexpectedly. There are psuedo-zombies and talking birds.

The book covers an awful lot of ground, some of it well, some if not so well. Mostly it's a fun ride. It definitely has a lot of the feel of the pulp adventures that preceded it. For a book of its era, I appreciate the balance of male and female characters and that the women had some agency. It's also nice to read one of the grand doyennes of fantasy!
