An excellent work of Robert E. Howard! It's especially interesting that the author stated when he was alive that he did not originate the stories but essentially channeled the stories from a spirit that spoke as if from memory. Reading the story is much more interesting from that consideration. A very different time and world then ours today.Tags : Conan 02 Of Cimmeria (Conan Series) [Robert Howard] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Conan 02 Of Cimmeria Conan Series Robert Howard 9780441114535 Books Reviews
Another uneven collection let's dissect it.
"The Curse of the Monolith" - L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter. Conan ventures east and gets caught in court intrigues and a gruesome monster. It's not Howard, and lacks his touch or feel. The villain's plan seems unnecessarily complicated and baroque, and how does he have control over the creature?
"The Bloodstained God" - L. Sprague de Camp took one of Howard's non-Conan historical adventure stories and rewrote it to include Conan and some fantasy. It's atmospheric, but the supernatural content comes out of nowhere and seems a deus ex machina.
"The Frost Giant's Daughter" - Howard at his best, Conan barbaric and nasty, but the menace he faces is shuddersome and surreal. A great story.
"Lair of the Ice Worm" - L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter. A rather generic fantasy adventure story with no real heft.
"Queen of the Black Coast" - Pure Howard, and at the top of his game. An amazing story with amazing characters and settings.
"The Vale of Lost Women" - Also pure Howard, but not published in his lifetime, making me think it was unfinished. It feels unfinished. In the tropics, Conan assists a captured woman who ends up lost in a remote valley and menaced by eerie creatures. It's got good atmosphere and real Howardian flair, but there's no buildup to the eerie material. It needs more real menace. Still, better than the next story by far....
"The Castle of Terror" - De Camp and Carter, and this is one of the worst stories ever included in a Conan anthology. Very generic, and Conan is only a bystander and onlooker in the action; he takes no real part. A total stinker. They should have known better.
"The Snout in the Dark" - De Camp and Carter, from an outline and partial rough draft by Howard. Conan serves a Kushite queen, and finds himself embroiled in court politics and demon-summoning. Not bad, but lacking Howard's flair.
Like the other Conan anthologies in this series, it's uneven. Two of Howard's best stories are here, but also some lesser work and some truly bad pastiches. I can't put into words how much I hate "The Castle of Terror." It's a bad, bad story and should have been excised. This also has the first of the "rewrites," where later authors take one of Howard's non-Conan stories and rewrites it to include Conan and some squeezed-in supernatural content; there'll be more of this in the future.
Haha
I love Robert E Howard's style!!
A+
This is the classic Ace Fantasy Series Conan Frazetta cover, three Howard tales, and five more collaborations with de Camp and Carter.
Excellent!!!!! There is nothing else to say. Great adventure story of the greatest barbarian to journey through the fantasy world.
In order to enjoy pulp fiction, one must often make allowances for the backward racial attitudes of the time. Since this collection of stories finds Conan adventuring in the Black Kingdoms, such unfortunate references are more pervasive than usual and detracted from the pleasure of the reading experience. In addition, most of these stories are of the monster-of-the-week type, which loses interest even when well written. As usual, self-appointed collaborators Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp fill out the anthology with material of inferior quality. “Queen of the Black Coast” is the clear highlight, although the short scene in which a voluptuous pirate queen woos Conan with the Mating Dance of Belit belongs on my list of most unintentionally funny passages.
