The title of this book is appropriate!!! I wasn't expecting this to be such a GREAT read! It's like she's talking in my head! I love her easy writing style. So personal, so down to earth. You literally could insert any trauma or tragedy into this same scenario and, if your lucky, come out the other side unscathed. OK...maybe a little scathed, but wiser for it. Thank you Laura Munson for sharing your journey with the world. You helped me in recovery from both of my parents dying within a 6 month time span. It's not a cry fest, or a what's wrong with me psychology text. It's a real story, about real people, who to come through tough times a little stronger. Without blame, anger, or becoming a victim. The message???? Read it, and find your own message, and perhaps gain a better knowing of yourself. I wish this woman was on my phone tree list. This Is Not The Story You Think It Is A Season of Unlikely Happiness Laura Munson 9780399156656 Books Reviews
I read the first few chapters of this book with great gusto. It has an easy to read style that took you by the hand and invited you in for coffee and a heart to heart chat. I confess i would have NOT been as tolerant of the writers situation but then I am certainly not as enlightened and of course the whole point of the book is to encourage the reader to take a step back and try to see the situation from the other persons viewpoint. Teaching tolerance is an excellent goal and one I need to learn. This book was a good primer. I couldn't help but loose interest towards the second half. Perhaps I could have given it 5 stars if I had read it in smaller pieces and pondered the content rather than racing through it as I did. Still, all in all This is Not the Story You Think It is... A Season of Unlikely Happiness is a good read and I am happy I purchased it.
Overall, I liked this book for its insight on sticking by a spouse when they are having a tough go of it and unhappy with everything in their life. I found this very inspirational as I have been in the position of the writers husband, wondering whether I had ever loved my spouse after being together for a long time where the reality was that I was unhappy with everything in my life and felt much the same as the writers husband. My husband stuck by me as well although it wasn't easy as is the case with the author of this book.
One thing I didn't like about the book was the constant reminders that the writer and her husband came from upper class backgrounds and could have followed in the footsteps of their family but chose not to. Their class background had to mentioned at least 25 times and it got annoying and irrelevant after awhile. Also, the writer does tend to speak in short and choppy sentences at times.
I really liked this inspirational book and would definitely recommend it.
What I liked about this journal-like book is the idea that what we believe affects the way our lives go. In other words, what we believe is real and likely to happen-for good or ill- takes things in that direction, especially when dealing with another person. A pessimistic outlook about relationship outcome, added to our partner's doubts, takes the relationship in a negative direction. Holding onto a space for things to work out, offers the possibility for that to happen, instead. It offers a fluid quality to a negative situation, keeping open the chance for things to get better, rather than casting the negative outcome in stone and making it the only possible outcome.
That's a very powerful position from which to operate. We're way more powerful than our circumstances.
I picked up this book after it was mentioned in my Writers Group as a great read by a woman from "no where USA" that made the best sellers list. It was interesting she did in 2015, after publishing this book in 2010.
Right away we find out she is a self help advocate, with her stack of books by her bedside with titles that I'm very familiar with (many of the same books are at my bedside as well). So I'm thinking, yeah, I'm going to like this book...and I did in small doses.
I was in awe of the writing in certain paragraphs and her inner diaglogue of being angry despite her level of consciousness was relatable. Yet the story was a bit redundant and more superficial than I'd hoped...was hoping she'd dig a bit deeper.
Maybe she will in a future book!
After reading her essay I was interested to read her memoir. Parts of the book I really liked and others I thought were actually insufferable. I grew tired of her constantly telling us about being unpublished and about pushing back on her privileged background. I do wish she had spent more time focusing on the crisis of the summer and how she and her children handled it. I felt that I learned more about it in the essay than in the book. Parts of the book were very relatable and overall I think the message she delivers is a positive one.
I have enjoyed this book with its truthful, raw turn of events and it helped me through a rather hard time. It is beautifully, yet realistically written. Few other books make me want to read them again immediately after finishing them. I will do just that start it from the beginning and taking this journey with her once again. She is a strong woman and she inspires others to be the same. Kudos to her and what a good read this is for all of us, women out there. Buy this and you will find your strength at least while you are there, with Laura, experiencing her own summer of what could have been a family tragedy.
