Bound by Ink A Living Ink Novel Book 2 eBook Marcella Burnard

I preferred the first, but this was a good installment in the saga.

The first two thirds are a bit slow on pacing and Isa really goes through the wringer. That said, the finale is intricate and explosive. It goes in a direction that American Gods fans will appreciate.

I need more books like this and I want book three pronto! A very aware and lush, yet gritty tale.

Bound by Ink A Living Ink Novel Book 2 eBook Marcella Burnard Reviews

[Review ebook provided free by Penguin Group via NetGalley.]

Marcella Burnard’s Bound by Ink (A Living Ink Novel) is not the first book in the series (that distinction belongs to Nightmare Ink), but as usual, the vagaries of receiving review books meant that I read it first. I do not recommend trying this; there’s a lot that seemed out of the blue, or confusing, that probably would have worked fine if I’d read the other book first. Since I didn’t get to see the buildup of the character chemistries I had trouble buying into one or two of them. It’s a very rich world, but it’s also a very complex world that clearly relies upon the worldbuilding in the first novel. I enjoyed it enough that I do plan to read that prior book. I already have it on my wish list, and as an ebook it currently seems to be at a very reasonable price.

Living tattoos are a wonderful concept with so much potential. There’s a lot of tension and some heart-pounding moments. Some of the high moments are a blend of philosophy and dialogue; I believe those would mean more to me if I had the background of the first book. The slowed pace that makes room for that dialogue needs that background to up the tension, so if it’s been a while since you read book one, I recommend that you refresh your memory by reading it again first.

The characters are quite interesting. I love Isa and Murmur the most; they have a lot of personality and they interact in fascinating ways. The difference in the ways people react to Isa (particularly during some demanding events for which she sometimes has to make sacrifices) adds danger and tension to even the quieter, slower moments. There’s a fascinating look at spiritual journeys, other realms, attitudes toward Living Ink tattoos and so forth that enrich the already lively world. This is a delicious example of strong worldbuilding and I look forward to seeing more of it.
Boy am I glad I gave this series another shot. The previous book was a rather frustrating read for me due to the excessive lack of world building and overall confusion. However, this time around, I have a much better handle on things, and I was able to enjoy the series and the great characters a whole lot more. Isa started to really "find" herself in the previous installment, but in this one, she's hit her stride. I really loved how strong she was, and that despite everything going so wrong around her and being stuck in some pretty horrid conditions, she never once faltered, and I loved her for it. On a side note, I have to say that the world behind this series is rather insane, and after the events of this book, I'm very anxious to see what happens next and how Isa handles it.

While the world building and overall flow of the story improved from the previous installment, unfortunately the romance took a turn for the worse. To be honest I just did not feel any connection at all between Isa and Steve. There seemed to be so much more between her and Murmur and yet she's supposed to be madly in love with Steve. I just didn't get it. Sure there's the complications of Murmur being her "ex" tattoo, and really a demon, but again there was no spark on the Steve side of things, and there was more than plenty on the Murmur side. It frankly left me scratching my head throughout, but perhaps this whole romance debacle will play out more in future books.

As I said before, I'm really glad I continued on with this series after its rocky start. Unique worlds and storylines like this are hard to come by, and I love having something completely new and fresh to read. There's nothing predictable here, and it made for a rather interesting read. I'd recommend this to fans of Urban Fantasy that are looking for a fast paced and action packed series that's completely out of the box.
Not exactly gone with the wind, but an enjoyable read non the less. Will be waiting on the next installment.
I was spellbound from the first page of the first book and I still have not been released by this amazing story. I nearly forgot to do the Thanksgiving baking! I just love this story and cannot wait for the next installment.
Good follow up to Nightmare Ink. The world building continued and the characters more interesting and defined. I am enjoying the story telling and am looking forward to the next book.
I loved the first book and waited impatiently for this one. I found this book to be bogged down in its storyline. Maybe trying too hard? I would read another, but hope it won't get bogged down in its own importance
I love this series. I have to confess 8 thought I had written my review a long time ago, right after I read it, but just discovered that I hadn't.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the whole new genre (for me) and unique premise. I devoured both books and totally hope there's more.
